4th July RIOTS: Akron mayor issues state of emergency, Curfew, Tear Gas

  • Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan has declared a state of emergency in the city
  • He canceled 4th of July festivities and issued a 9 p.m. city-wide curfew
  • The emergency order was prompted after violent protests downtown Sunday
  • Horrigan said officials ‘will not tolerate the destruction of property or violence’ 
  • Activists were protesting the shooting death of 25-year-old Jayland Walker
  • Walker was shot dead after being hit 60 times by police during a traffic stop
  • Walker’s family asked demonstrators to maintain peaceful during their protests
