A $3,000 Samsung TV reportedly came loaded with an always-on microphone, location tracking and a system that monitors what people watch.

The full scale of the telemetry that was deployed on mankind is only just now beginning to come to light.

For a great many, the apparatus was comprehensive: the television that watched, the phone that reported where it went, the speaker that listened from the counter were just the tip of the iceberg.

For days now my feed has been full of reports like this one:

People are using the tools of the day to uncover what was hidden. For those whose private life matched their public persona, that is of no great consequence. It is harder for the one who lived a lie.

The temporal powers saw a great deal. Some of them may also have had a hand in arranging the provocations and temptations which they then recorded.

One could spend great effort rooting that machinery out, and some will.

One could declare uproar and seek remedy through the courts, and some will do that too. Texas already has. It won consent terms from Samsung and LG, binding only in Texas and with no fine paid. Outside Texas, nothing in those settlements requires a change, and a settlement compelled by a court is not a change of heart.

I believe there is a higher opportunity, in keeping with the change of age. The wicked did not prevail. The apparatus built to ensnare and corrupt can be burned, or it can be repurposed. It can be used to accuse, or it can be used to help.

Whether these technologies age into eternity as onramps for personal transformation is being decided in the coming days.
