After more than 200 people fall ill, raw beef recall expands to 12 million pounds
(WTXL) – As the U.S. Department of Agriculture investigated an October recall on beef, officials realized some patients were falling ill from products not included in the initial recall, so they decided to expand it.
More than 12 million pounds of raw beef products distributed nationwide by the JBS Tolleson company are under recall after a Monday news release added 5.1 pounds to the standing recall.
Investigators say 246 people from 26 states became ill from what may be salmonella contamination from July 26 to Sept. 7, 2018. This is a significant increase from October, by which time officials had determined 57 people from 16 states had fallen ill.
At least three patients had purchased JBS Tolleson ground beef products that were not included in the Oct. 4 recall, according to the press release.
The recalled products were packaged from July 26 to Sept. 7, 2018, and bear the establishment number “EST. 267” inside the USDA mark of inspection. They were shipped nationwide to retail locations and institutions.
Feds expand beef recall as salmonella outbreak broadens to 246 cases in 26 states
More than 5 million more pounds of raw beef products have been added to a national recall over concerns about possible salmonella contamination, and the number of people sickened has soared to 246 patients in 26 states, federal officials said Tuesday.
The initial recall announced by the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service in early October included 6.5 million pounds of raw beef products. The addition Tuesday brings the total recalled amount to 12,093,271 pounds, and authorities say they’re concerned it could be in consumers’ freezers.
The number of those sickened has increased drastically in recent weeks. Initially it was around 60 people in 16 states. Tuesday’s recall marks a more than four-fold increase in the number of cases in two months; nearly 60 people have been hospitalized as a result of the current outbreak.
Dog food recalled over potentially toxic levels of vitamin D, FDA says
At least eight brands of dry dog foods are being recalled after the FDA said the food could contain toxic levels of vitamin D. In an alert issued Monday, the FDA urged owners to stop using the recalled products.
The FDA said that after vets had received complaints, testing found that samples of the dog food contained potentially toxic amounts of vitamin D. The FDA said the only pet products that have been impacted are food made for dogs.
The affected brands include: Nutrisca, Natural Life Pet Products, Sunshine Mills, Inc., ANF, Inc., Lidl (Orlando brand), Kroger, ELM Pet Foods, Inc. and Ahold Delhaize.
