A vampire graveyard in Poland contains more than 100 human burials, including at least 30 in which the dead were pinned down, locked in place, or positioned to stop them from rising. Archaeologists have studied the unmarked cemetery near Pień, close to Ostromecko, since 2005. Excavations at the site have uncovered a young woman with an iron sickle across her neck and a triangular padlock fastened to a toe, along with a child buried face down with another lock near the feet. The cemetery dates to the 17th century, when fear of revenants, dead people believed capable of returning, shaped some burial practices.
