As a Canadian, I am so disappointed by my country. How can people stand by and watch their freedoms be stripped away?

Let me preface this by saying I was not born in Canada. My parents escaped a Communist regime with barely $100 to their names. They picked Canada in hopes of giving our family a better life. Their hard work afforded us with an amazing education and great quality of life. We were able to purchase property and find jobs that pay our bills without the same struggles they had to entail. We know what tyranny looks like and Canada was a saving grace. I have always been proud to call myself a Canadian even though I am an immigrant.

Today, I see what is happening in the country and am brought to tears. Watching people have their bank accounts frozen because they donated to a cause that the government disagrees with is not something you will every see in a liberal democracy. And to watch friends and colleagues tell me it’s right or somehow these people had it coming is simply fucked up. I don’t care what you are protesting, I don’t care what you believe in – the government never ever has the right to stop you. Protesting can never be illegal in a free country.

Those who don’t agree with the governments actions are scared to speak up. I have conversations in private, and people are worried about their financial futures and wellbeing if they say something or do something.

I fear for the future of this country and I don’t know where to go from here. I just hope that people will come to their senses.
