The P.1 coronavirus strain, first identified in Brazil, is able to bypass natural immunity developed by prior infections more easily than other variants, the Financial Times reported, citing joint research from several universities.
According to the data, the strain is between 1.4 and 2.2 times more transmissible than others, while also being “able to evade 25%-61% of protective immunity elicited by previous infection” with other variants, the newspaper said.
In the research paper, which is expected to be released tomoorow, the scientists reportedly call for “urgent” testing of existing COVID-19 vaccines to determine their efficacy against P.1.
