Lagarde told the Governing Council and European Council President António Costa she will step down February 7, 2027. Her term was set to run until the end of October 2027. Speculation about an early exit had built for months, with the World Economic Forum floated as a destination. The announcement landed the same day the ECB held its deposit rate at 2.5 percent amid the Iran-war oil shock and French bond pressure. Successors under discussion include former Dutch central bank head Klaas Knot and Spain’s Pablo Hernández de Cos.
