Europe is incapable of defending itself because it is ruled by Washington, which keeps them weak and (Germany in particular) self-hating as a post-WWII policy objective.
This relationship with America and its anti-Russian spear tip (Baltics, etc) takes diplomacy with a resurgent Russia off the table.
The cherry on top is that it isn’t clear the United States can even defend Europe from Russia because the US is itself declining while also pivoting to fighting China in Asia.
Ultimately, it’s in Europe’s interests to assert itself against Washington.
