Rep.-elect Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.) told a podcast Monday that House Democrats are “getting closer every single day” to believing they should start impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump.
Special counsel Robert Mueller and federal prosecutors implicated Trump in separate court filings on Friday—ahead of this week’s sentencing of his former attorney Michael Cohen—in hush payment schemes regarding the 2016 election and also presented further evidence of Russian interest in assisting Trump, although there was no direct evidence of collusion.
“Pod Save America” host Tommy Vietor, an ex-Obama administration official, interviewed Omar and recapped a warning made over the weekend by top House Democrats like Jerry Nadler (N.Y.) and Adam Schiff (Calif.) that Trump could be impeached and possibly imprisoned after leaving office.
“Do you think that the House should start the impeachment process? Is that the right use of time and priorities?” Vietor asked.
“So this weekend was really eye-opening for a lot of people, and I don’t even think that most people comprehend how detrimental some of the things that came to light were,” Omar said. “I think it’ll be important for us to move as fast as we can once we have all of the facts on the table.”
She added it was important for the House, which the Democrats will take control of when the new Congress is seated in January, to be a check on Trump.
“So, is that TBD [to be determined] on impeachment, you think? That’s an OK answer. There’s a lot to learn,” Vietor said.
“I have said long before we even had the full details that an impeachment was quite possible for us,” she said. “Because you could see where we were headed, and I think we are getting closer every single day to really believing that that process needs to start, and we need to make sure that we are holding the interest of the American people in getting this president, who is corrupt in so many ways, to not be the face and the leader of our nation.”
