A letter drafted by Sam Liccardo and co-signed by George Whitesides, Lori Trahan and Ted Lieu asks Mike Johnson to bring the House back immediately and keep it in session until Congress advances bipartisan AI safeguards.
The chamber returns Monday, sits one more week, then leaves until November 9.
It follows current and former Anthropic researchers going public with warnings that AI could wipe out humanity within a decade, one putting the odds above 10%.
Johnson has scheduled a vote on data centers raising electricity bills and nothing on AI itself.
His office declined to comment.
The bills already exist.
Lieu and Republican Nathaniel Moran wrote an AI Kill Switch Act requiring every system to keep a way for humans to slow or shut it down.

AI just cracked a math problem that stumped humans for a century, and the people who built it are talking about EXTINCTION
Roughly 10,000 agents worked the Navier-Stokes problem for 88 hours, building on each other until they had a solution.
One of seven Millennium Prize Problems, gone in a few days and a few million dollars of compute.
A year ago forecasters gave AI a 20 percent shot at doing this by 2030.
Hours after the proof landed, a researcher quit Anthropic over safety fears and said the people building these systems believe they could kill everyone.
A colleague whose job is preventing exactly that put the odds above 10 percent…
