House Energy and Commerce Chair Brett Guthrie declined Wednesday to commit to timing for a panel vote on a bipartisan proposal to put guardrails on AI — and said it may not even come until next year.
“I’m not saying nothing will happen, but I think a bill of that magnitude needs work,” the Kentucky Republican said.
In an interview during the POLITICO Decoded Summit in Washington, Guthrie pointed to a bipartisan bill from Rep. Jay Obernolte (R-Calif.) and Democratic Rep. Lori Trahan of Massachusetts as a starting point for putting protections on AI. Key parts of the bill, known as the FRONTIER Act, have the support of OpenAI in the wake of pressure on congressional leaders to create guardrails for the evolving technology.
