One of these things is not like the other. Why is the US CDC official symptom list, and all the testing that is based on it, so incomplete?

US CDC symptom list as of 3/31/2020 is limited to “fever, cough, shortness of breath.” Source – click on symptoms if not displayed: www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/symptoms-testing/symptoms.html

World Health Organization symptom list as of 3/31/2020 – in a Q&A posted 3/09/2020 – is much longer – click on “What are the symptoms of COVID-19” at www.who.int/news-room/q-a-detail/q-a-coronaviruses

We cannot know our true virus numbers yet in the US because in many or most areas, we still refuse to test patients who don’t have a certain limited number of symptoms – fever and cough, and/or difficulty breathing, even though the World Health Organization identifies several other symptoms that can indicate COVID-19, and these symptoms have been on their website, and widely known, for weeks:

“The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, tiredness, and dry cough.”

“Some patients may have aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat or diarrhea.”

“These symptoms are usually mild and begin gradually. Some people become infected but don’t develop any symptoms and don’t feel unwell.” Source: www.who.int/news-room/q-a-detail/q-a-coronaviruses

I want to be clear here – the above does not say “Patients will have a fever and cough and some of them will also have a sore throat or diarrhea.” It says While many patients will present with a fever or cough or tiredness, some of them have none of those things and instead have other symptoms, like aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat or diarrhea.

Unbelievably, even at this late date, we don’t know the true scale and scope of the pandemic because we just aren’t looking.
