Hurricane Simon (still around 90 mph Monday, drifting west of Mexico) and the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel left five dead on Mexico’s Pacific coast. One 71-year-old man killed when a wall collapsed in Chilpancingo, Guerrero. Four others, including two children, recovered in Ensenada, Baja California from flooding. More people missing. Helicopters pulled people from floodwaters. Damage in Acapulco and coastal towns. In Southern California the same system destroyed boardwalk sections in Long Beach and damaged beachfront homes. At least nine homes declared unsafe. Newport Beach piers reopened but caution advised near the water. Las Vegas tied its all-time October daily rainfall record at 1.08 inches (last matched in 1947). Streets near the Strip flooded. Eight vehicle rescues. Flood watches extended into Utah, Arizona, and the Grand Canyon. West Texas now under flood watches as Simon’s remnants combine with other moisture for several days of heavy rain.
