SEIU Local 1000 stages first-ever one-day strike of 100,000 California state workers after contract expires and talks stall.

Thousands of California state workers represented by SEIU Local 1000 walked off the job today in the union’s first strike since its founding. The union, which covers roughly 100,000 employees including auditors, nurses and counselors, has been without a contract since late June. Members demand a 20 percent raise over three years, lower healthcare costs and more telework flexibility after Gov. Gavin Newsom’s four-day return-to-office mandate. Roughly 4,400 essential workers were exempted. Pickets formed in Sacramento, Los Angeles, Oakland and other cities. Mediation is scheduled to resume October 30. The action follows an impasse declaration in early October and a 96 percent strike authorization vote.
