Most of them were not consciously informing on the Proud Boys.
The FBI approached them under the false pretence of helping “fight Antifa” and fooled them into divulging details about themselves and those around them.
Around 2 or 3 years ago I had heard that the FBI was recruiting PBs to help build a non-existent RICO case against Antifa.
Some of these people believed in Q Anon or that these were FBI agents secretly working for Trump.
At the end of the day, they were using information gathered on the people talking to them “about Antifa” to build this ridiculous case that will likely be the end of them.
There is no reason to ever talk to an FBI agent, especially without a lawyer.
They aren’t building any case against Antifa, they are the armed wing of the Anti Defamation League.
