America is in DANGER, and several of America’s allies are also in DANGER.
The threat of a “permanent blackout” across the United States caused by an EMP(electro-magnetic pulse) weapon has received a lot of press in recent months.Considered an unlikely event by most people in years past, the more it has been discussed in both the private sector and the Pentagon, the more likely it has become that we will one day be attacked by an EMP, seems to be what the data on the EMP threat is saying. The U.S. government has even created a commission to address the threat, EMPCommission.org.
Just One EMP Could Be Devastating
As a result of just one EMP attack on the U.S., in an instant the nation’s power grid will fail as anything with circuits (including most automobiles built since the early 1960s when computerized components became more standard in automobiles) will cease to work.
Trains, buses, subway systems and commercial airlines and other modern planes will cease to work also — even the 4,000 or so commercial flights (think Delta, U.S. Airways, Southwest Airlines, and many others) that are in the sky over America at any given time.
Our electricity driven society, built on a complex web of intersecting wires and computer circuits, will suddenly come to a standstill.
All Hell will probably break loose shortly after.
Chaos Following An EMP Attack On The U.S.
Why chaos after an EMP?
Imagine the world suddenly without TV, radio, phone, internet, refrigeration, microwaves, stoves and ovens, washers and dryers, waste removal, sewage treatment facilities, clean water from the tap (provided by water companies that use industrial equipment to treat water; even water that at a previous time may have been sewage) making it safe to drink; gas companies who provide heat and power gone; or of course the electric company.
Imagine each going offline — permanently.
Imagine the U.S. unable to transport food from farmland in distant states and counties — meat, dairy, eggs, produce, grain products, packaged food.
300,000 million people (the population of the United States) will quickly descend on the packaged food left on store shelves in the initial hours of the realization that an EMP had taken place.
Many will hoard — meaning, get there hands on as much packaged food as possible and then fight tooth and nail to keep it out of the hands of others who may experience panic when they see store shelves emptying and realize they don’t have more than a few days of food at home. They realize now they’re in trouble. Food is disappearing fast. Everyone is taking it.
Too bad those unprepared for disaster didn’t see the signs that America (and other Western nations) are increasingly hated by nations in the world — nations with the desire and growing means to bring our nation (and possibly other Western nations) to collapse.
There will be additional panic that will become widespread across the states — a concern that grocery stores are shutting down permanently, due to the EMP.
All Food Deliveries Will Stop
With no vehicles or trucks on the road — due to the majority of vehicles’ fried components as a result of the EMP — there will be no new deliveries of food to restock store shelves as store shelves empty when there’s a mad dash for groceries across the land.
If that’s not bad enough, all foods requiring refrigeration will start going bad within just a few hours. A fully stocked refrigerator and freezer will have to be eaten in a very short time frame (frozen meats could be thawed and then smoked using emergency methods for long term food storage, so not all is lost for people who have taken the time to learn how to smoke and preserve meat — we’ve covered this in another article).
Lights Out For Good
Lights out in every city. Jails and prisons power down (how are more than 1,000,000 inmates going to respond to that? Probably quite a few riots. There will likely be a handful of mass escapes.)
Nursing homes and hospitals will lose power instantly also — the elderly, sick, and those requiring medical equipment to simply stay alive will be in immediate trouble. Within minutes and hours people will start dying — within days many of these people requiring medical devices to live will be dead.
Many other Americans will be in trouble also — especially those due for refills of important medication they rely on to live; this includes diabetics (which there are a lot of nowadays) who have to store their insulin medication under refrigeration as it goes bad quickly when not kept at a constant, cool temperature. Many diabetics will die as a result of the EMP.
But the biggest initial death toll from an EMP isn’t going to come from the sick and elderly — it’s going to come from the skies overhead.
One expert on the EMP threat says that in the first hour we can expect 250,000 – 500,000 people to lose their lives. What? How?
Remember the approximately 4,000 commercial flights in the sky over America at any given time? When the EMP strikes, their on-board computers and electrical components are going to be fried, just like computers and electrical components down on the ground. And when that happens a few thousand commercial jets with 250,000 – 500,000 people on board (when you total the number of flights in the sky at any given time) are going to be on a collision course with disaster, their on-board computers and navigation now dead, zero power.
It’s extremely difficult to pilot a jet with zero power and bring it in for an emergency landing — some might say it’s impossible. This isn’t a matter of an engine failing and then the pilot getting on the radio and being guided to a nearby airstrip. No, it won’t be like a traditional emergency landing.
One Second After An EMP
Does 4,000 flights falling from the sky sound far-fetched? These reports come from William R. Forstchen Ph.D., author of “One Second After”, an expert on EMPs who wrote this book in an effort to bring attention to the threat of EMP and what just one nuclear detonation 300 miles above the earth would do to our nation.
William Forstchen writes on his website, OneSecondAfter.com: “EMP, has managed to ‘stealth’ its way on to the highly dangerous list and few, except for a small number of personnel in the Pentagon, various research labs, and men like Congressman Bartlett (R., MD) who heads the Congressional Investigative Committee on EMP, are aware of it.”
Ultimately — this isn’t a far fetched scenario, unfortunately. If it were far-fetched the U.S. government would not have created a commission to address the threat — and evolving threat — of an EMP. See: EMPCommission.org EMP Commission website.
How to Make and Store Electricity Before a Catastrophic Grid Collapse
How to store and re-generate electricity as an extended power supply before a grid collapse.
Never mind the loss of communications but the danger to health from no refrigeration, loss of medical facilities and overall halt to most of daily life’s most common elements would spread the damage on an unheard of scale. A national and societal collapse would follow quickly.
That is why you, me, and everyone else that may be taking steps to prep should include energy storage and energy generation on their list of survival tools for a catastrophic or extended disaster.
Surviving A Long Term Power Loss
Surviving a power loss means being ready to supply your own needs. Having stockpiles of long shelf life foods, medical supplies and a means to power working personal devices like smartphones and tablets are absolutely essential. For a list of basic survival foods see Top 10 Survival Foods to Stockpile and Top 10 High Calorie Survival Foods. These can be your “Survival shopping checklist”.
Be Sure You Have The Basics Covered — Next, Move To Backup Power
Make sure you have repair supplies such as sheets of plywood, screws, nails and a dependable manual drill and hand tools to make patches and repairs in walls and roofs. Duct tape and baling twine are effective temporary binding tools for emergency repairs under severe conditions. Extra water supplies and a means to filter and purify water are extremely important as well. Save milk jugs for future use and for portable carriers.
Long Term Outages And National Catastrophe
Adapt Or Fail
In an emergency situation, either short or long term there are many unknown scenarios so always be prepared for the worst.
Be assured that with the grid down or gone, life will change and to succeed and survive you will have to adapt. Even the best generator system can only produce a certain amount of the electricity you were accustomed to using.
- Basic appliances will be available but will need to be run on a schedule that saves the most power. Having your shelter well insulated for heat and cooling will reduce power consumption.
- Having a plan for staying warm without electrical heat and staying cool without electrical air conditioning means you will have a lot more emergency power in the first hours and days.
- Moving to a sunrise to sunset schedule will be a necessity, storing rain water, making use of the local environment more efficiently and storing foods through preservation rather than refrigeration will make for successful living.
The Electrical System
The basic electric power generating system consists of a fossil fuel powered generator, bank of storage batteries and converter (DC to AC). For energy independence a fossil fuel (gasoline) generator is best. Select a model that will generate the largest amount of power efficiently on the lowest amount of fuel. The generator will be run to charge the battery bank.
Use Your Battery Bank For “Silent” Power — Not The Generator
The battery bank is your source of electrical power, not the generator. Read that again.
The generator can be programmed to run on a set schedule to kick in when batteries are at a certain low point — though it may be best to run the generator manually, only at opportune times and even using “lookouts” a block or so away to give you an “all clear” signal that it’s ok to run the generator (even “quiet” generator models make some noise; operate with caution; more on this below…)
How To Choose The Best Generator.
There are many types, models and brands available. Consumer Reports is considered the most objective purchasing guide and they have an article about selecting a generator. Since there are many more generators available now, use their criteria as your guide. A tour of your local big box home improvement store can be one place to start, but an RV store and more importantly RV technician may have better input.
Because Individual Energy Needs Vary, We Can’t Advise You
What we can advise you on is this:
- Figure out a way to save as much energy as possible and how to use electrical devices in such a way as to consume the least amount of power. For example, change all your light bulbs to the lowest watts possible and, regarding heat, maximize all insulating properties of your dwelling as well as seal all doors, windows, etc.
- Have the equipment (empty barrels, tubs, scrub rack) to handwash and dry clothing; that also includes dishes, pots, and pans.
- When not using a specific device, unplug all devices from inverters, generators, etc. as each can slowly drain power (called “phantom” power loss), even when certain devices are “off”.
- Forget about powering your large screen television; a small portable television with a low energy draw can be the way to go (if cable or satellite are out, an external antennae — you may need a large external antennae — can still capture broadcast news — don’t forget at one time that’s how most televisions received signals). If you don’t need television, then radio is going to be the best device to go with for news as it draws less power than a television.
Be Prepared Before It Happens
… Don’t let “too little, too late” be what’s written on your gravestone one day. Don’t only have that backup power supply, but have the knowledge to protect all your electronics including that generator and battery bank from the possible effects of an EMP (electro-magnetic pulse). Take what you’ve learned about Faraday Cage construction and go bigger with the box you build to store your generator, wires, low watt appliances, and battery bank in. The last thing you want is to have your backup power system fried before you can put it to use.
Dan Sullivan, a guest writer in past months for SecretsofSurvival.com, put together this EMP video on Faraday Cage construction to explain how it can protect electronics from the effects of an EMP. It’s an eye opener.
Attacks on the national power grid, the threat of EMP, weather extremes and the inability of local and national agencies to provide relief or recovery are a “new normal” in today’s chaotic world. The daily news tells us only the tip of the iceberg; the reality is below that tip and can quickly overwhelm the unprepared. Several states and countries are showing us every year what happens to the unprepared.
Starting today, you can have the information, materials and resolve to survive. Go for it! People are depending on you.
