Russia freed 74-year-old Michigan teacher Stephen Hubbard on October 21 during U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff’s talks with Vladimir Putin. Hubbard had been sentenced to nearly seven years on charges of fighting as a mercenary in Ukraine that the State Department called fabricated; he was the last American formally designated wrongfully detained. Trump said he asked Putin directly last week and “there was no ‘swap.’” Witkoff thanked Putin and called him a “humanitarian.” Hubbard was reported at Pulkovo airport ready to leave. The meeting continues discussions on Ukraine.
