Lightfoot faces increased criticism over her handling of crime in Chicago

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has proposed to give herself an annual pay rise bumped up to the rate of inflation and capped at 5 percent, despite facing increased criticism over her handling of violent crime in the city.
Mayor Lightfoot currently takes home an annual salary of $209,915. That would rise to $216,210 from May 22 of next year. This would allow for the mayor’s salary to increase up to 5 percent each year. The ordinance does stipulate that the mayor could opt out of the pay rise.
The ordinance announced on Wednesday would give the mayor, city clerk and treasurer access to a pay increase each year. This would mirror the process used by aldermen who are already eligible for the pay rise.
