RHODE ISLAND (WLNE) – The federal government’s $2 trillion stimulus package is set to go into effect Tuesday at 8:00 a.m.
The CARES Act expands unemployment benefits to a range of workers who were not previously eligible to apply. This group includes freelance workers, contract workers, and the self-employed.
“We haven’t had an income in three weeks,” said Jo-Anna Cassino, owner of Flipp Salon-Apothecary in Providence. She’s a contract worker and has not been able to file for unemployment since the governor shut down all salons.
Cassino is anxious for the Federal relief to take effect.
“It will mean everything. It’s everything. It’s our survival. It’s how we buy groceries and pay our bills,” said Cassino.
Included in the stimulus package are the coronavirus rebate checks. In the coming weeks, most working families will get a check for $1,200 per adult, plus $500 per child.
