“Lost Battles”

by Chris Black

Drowned out in the hype of the previous week is the data on suicides for 2021 (www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/vsrr/vsrr024.pdf) which was released by the United States National Center for Health Statistics.

A total of 47,656 Americans took their own lives in 2021, and while this is indeed sad we are going to focus on the most affected group: White men.

As has been usual for the 20 of the past 22 years the male suicide rate rose, again, this time by 4% from 2020 to 2021, or an increase of 1,474 male suicides.

A total of 38,025 American men took their lives in 2021. A minimum of 33,500 of these men are expected to be White men.

White men account for 70% (www.henryford.com/blog/2020/01/men-and-suicide-what-you-should-know) of all suicide deaths in the United States, and the problem only grows worse with each passing year.

The state is not going to help them, it is not going to help us, and so it is incumbent upon this collection of political groups and personalities to do what we can for those of us in our circles and our personal lives.

Every suicide was a preventable death.
