Aleksandar Vucic conceded defeat in parliamentary elections today to the opposition “Student List” movement, bringing a sudden end to his ruling Serbian Progressive Party’s 14 year dominance. Independent projections and early tally data show the student-backed coalition capturing roughly 53% of the vote and an estimated 141 seats in the 250 seat assembly, well past the threshold required to form a new government. Vucic publicly acknowledged the defeat shortly after polls closed, confirming his party secured only around 105 seats amid record national voter turnout.

The historic political shift comes after nearly two years of sustained, student-led anti-corruption demonstrations that rattled Vucic’s hold on power. The nationwide protest movement was initially sparked by the deadly November 2024 train station canopy collapse in Novi Sad, which killed 16 people and sparked public anger over political cronyism and structural oversight failures.
