Half cows, entire pigs: Families are buying meat in bulk to save money
It was the $200 weekly grocery bills that finally did him in. With three young kids and soaring meat costs, Logan Wagoner decided it was time to go whole hog.
This spring, the St. Louis attorney bought half a cow and an entire pig — plus a freezer that now holds 320 pounds of bacon, sausages, rib-eye steaks, ground beef and soup bones in his basement.
“My kids eat a lot of hot dogs, and the prices just got to be too much,” said Wagoner, 36. “Finally we said, ‘This is wild. What else can we do?’”

Calculations made for the Guardian based on Ofgem and ONS figures are ‘truly terrifying’
Some of Britain’s poorest families will see as much as 47% of their entire household budget swallowed up by energy costs this autumn, figures produced for the Guardian show.
The calculations were done by investment platform Interactive Investor on Friday morning, moments after the new energy price cap announcement, and are based on figures from Ofgem and Office for National Statistics (ONS) family spending data.

Millions of British households have been warned to brace for double digit inflation to last until winter next year – as energy bills are set to rocket a staggering 80% in October in the biggest crunch to living standards the country has faced since the 1950s.
Economists have said that Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation – the UK Government’s official measure of the rate of rising prices – could remain above 10% for the next year and more.
