The reason the balloon isn’t shot down is because it’s not possible to do so.
The government is saying they can’t shoot it down because it would create too much debris.
At altitudes nearly a 100,000 feet no US missiles in service like Patriots (24k ft ceiling) or even the THADD (93k ft ceiling) can reach it.
Fighter jets can only fly as high as 50,000 and their air to air missiles cannot reach a 100,000 because of the low air density.
The “balloon” is essentially in space. You would need an antisatellite missile to shoot it down, which would turn into MASSIVE debris raining down over a huge area, essentially like a meteor shower.
They want to recover it too.
Some fucking Chinese spy baloon meandered over Canada and the USA to US nuclear weapons sites in Montana?
AND NOW THERE'S ANOTHER ONE?
IT WAS UNDETECTED FOR DAYS. WHAT A JOKE! pic.twitter.com/0qudOwRPa7

Every major power in the world has spy satellites, especially the US and China. Some of these satellites can pick up heat signatures from inside a building.
Stuff like this probably happens all the time and doesn’t get covered. US, Chinese, and Russian planes regularly play “I’m not touching youuuu” with each other’s airspace and those routine incidents never receive this kind of coverage.
If “the balloon” matters at all, I would bet that it’s just hysteria-porn to try and mentally prepare the public for the inevitable military confrontation with China.
